Cesspools of drugs and "low income" reaching for the brass ring...please say you do not condone that. I guess since a certain city charges a "tax" it makes it okay to have one in that town? [i]

I have no say in what that town does or does not do. Evidently it is OK with the people in charge of the town and it`s occupants.
For myself I don`t have to worry about what does or does not go on in them. I never go there.

[i]"The are all illegal gaming operations or else they would not be open; if they were not paying cash prizes why would anyone go? Some more of that good country life for ya I guess."

Not by my definition of good country life. When it was the good country life they would have never been here. There wasn`t enough population surrounding the lake to support them.
If I had my say about such things we wouldn`t have the sleaze joints. If we needed gambling establishments , Texas could do away with the anti-gambling laws. We would then have casinos. Nice ones that would generate some cash flow that couldn`t be siphoned off under the table and would be used to improve things. I mean if we need to do it, let`s go for the gold. Smiley
The game rooms are not there because the county law enforcement can`t do anything to shut them down. They are there, up and running, left alone until the next raid day by The Hunt County Sherrif`s Office and any other law enforcement that needs a little press coverage. Headline news every time. Man those guys rock. They take the machines, confiscate the money from them, file enough wrists slaps to get more headlines. Most of which do not amount to a hill of beans in the end. Then the machines are back in the buildings after the proper down time and everyone is happy. It`s not the blame of the game room operators. It`s the guys in office that are running the money machine scam. It pays their salaries, get them raises, adds more perks for them, and as has been said by the newly elected guy taking the office, creates even another team dedicated to the game room enforcement. It`s an understood and accepted racket by both sides.

"My "area" of the lake is very well maintained. Who made that happen? Well I'll tell ya.....me and my neighbors."

Exactly. Smiley

"Within 3 years of fighting the sheriff, the county and making our voices heard and NOT being afraid of the "country" folk that have been running the scene for many years, our area is clean with one or two exceptions. If a small group of people can do this in one area why is it the paid employees of a municipality can not?"

Maybe those who live there might want ot get involved and get answers to those questions. they might also delve into where all that generated revenue is going. Who is supporting what? Smiley

" Am I the only one that thinks a downtown area tells all about the people that live there? A cockroach in my glass of tea in one restaurant and watching a grown man stick his arm in a bucket of marinara and then scrape it clean in the same bucket in another keeps me eating at home, guess that is covered under the "country" part you are holding strong to? I have always lived outside city limits, in many states but this "city" of Quinlan we all share is a sad representative of a clean, "good 'ol boy" town. Low income is no excuse for filth or laziness."

Such as that never existed when it was a country town. The good `ol boys had to pack up when the city swarmed the country. Along came what was bound to follow. All in the name of "good for the community" and all those jobs and revenue you spoke of. I can`t speak for the people of Quinlan. I don`t live there. It would appear to me if all those jobs and revenue that was generated it shouldn`t`t be a low income area though. The money has to be going somewhere.

"I believe I made a mistake buying here and as soon as the economy turns back around color me gone."

Yep and so will so many, many more that came here.
I wish you all the luck in the world. Sorry that it rattled your cage in order for me to have a sounding board to voice my opinion.
We both definitely see the problems, but I put the blame where it rightly falls. Those that are grabbing every cent that they can squeeze out of it while they can and putting nothing back in return. The ones who could care less for the area or the people who have lived here way before they came and showed us what a miracle "progress" can be. When it is milked for every cent that can be manipulated from it, they too will be long gone.

One more thing.......I remember Quinlan as being the gateway to West Tawakoni in the late 70-early 80's and by gateway I mean to the bars where the naked girls danced, remember that? I was just trying to figure out when it was a nice clean town and I am also trying to remember the "onslaught" from the west....................

The strip clubs were ahead of their time. Not any of those in Dallas are they? Smiley
Well I would say if that was the time you can remember back to, then you weren`t in the mix of the charge, but you got to see into what was going to progress.
The times I was speaking of, most of the area completely surrounding what is now the lake was pasture land for the most part. Before that, there was no Lake Tawakoni for Quinlan to be a gateway to.
It was just a small, quiet country town like so many more that were in the area. Family farms, small family owned businesses that supplied the needs of the "country" folk who lived in the area. Back before the honest, simple way of life that was cherished and maintained by people who didn`t mind getting in the dirt or having a little cow poo on their boots was forced out to obtain this better way of life that has "progressed" to the point of being so incensed over all the "good" that came with it.
I can remember a time when the County Sheriff was Lem Warren. Another old country boy, about 6`6" with hands the size of platters.
He always had time to talk to the people he represented . Even little awestruck guys like I was at the time. I know that he viewed himself as the employee of those same people. Those days are long gone.

Somehow this has turned into a pissing match and that is just silly.

I enjoyed the trip in the way-back machine but the NOW is what I am interested in the most. You made some good calls on the HOW we got here but that does not fix the NOW.

Doesn`t do a lot of good to just to complain about the situation, then play musical chairs with the good ole boys that be when election time comes. We had a shot at breaking that cycle in the Sheriff`s office this year, but evidently there were enough voters who either doesn`t care enough to do it or are not interested enough.

Did I see you at the meet the candidate days or any of the debates around the area? Were you standing and asking questions? Did I bump into you while out putting up yard signs or even at the polls?

Are you aware of who you need to contact about the game rooms? It is not the sheriff it is Dan Flynn, your rep. He is the one trying to pass legislation to make the immoral also illegal...hope he was in the list you voted for.

We did manage to replace a few of the corrupt people in our local government and now only time will tell if we need to do more.

It is a hard pill to swallow, but I am just amazed that it doesn`t occur more often under the circumstances. It`s still better than Dallas in my books though.

A hard pill to swallow? I hope that means it angered you and you will get more involved in the changes that are needed rather than saying simply that it is better than Dallas which by the way it isn't. Check out the per ca pita crime statistics and then check out the unsolved crime rate....amazing. Have you checked to see how many sex offenders are on your street or in your area? I think they should have to wear placards but I guess that would be unconstitutional, so we must keep track of them in other ways.

Did you find out who owner the old gin we spoke of, that is a hoot. It will stay there a while I guess with the price per square foot they are asking for it.  Grin

I enjoyed the back and forth but I guess we were really on different pages all together....I am on the "here we are, what now" page and you seem stuck on the "back in the day" and "not my fault" pages.

That's cool, we all gotta do something! Wink

Maybe I will see you out this weekend when my community is organized to pick up trash on the highway, bring gloves, trash bags and watch out for hypodermic needles!

Locally, I know the candidates and what they represent.

"Were you standing and asking questions? "

I`m not into fairy tales.

"Did I bump into you while out putting up yard signs or even at the polls?"

I`m almost sure you didn`t bump into me at the polls. The day I voted I don`t recall any emergency vehicles showing up for someone who passed out from indignation. Smiley

"He is the one trying to pass legislation to make the immoral also illegal"

Save us from those with any power who set out with their definition of "immoral" and attempt to make it "law".
Less government , not more.

"Did you find out who owner the old gin we spoke of, that is a hoot."

No. I have no interest in what private property the gentleman owns, nor do I believe it is any of my concern. The last time I looked it wasn`t against any law to own property.

"Maybe I will see you out this weekend when my community is organized to pick up trash on the highway, bring gloves, trash bags and watch out for hypodermic needles!"

Will that be before or after you mow my lawn?  Grin

T, when it comes to political issues, there are going to be disagreements.
That`s how things gets sorted out.
I felt it was a very constructive discussion. An education in reality is priceless IMHO.
But hey.....it`s not my playground so....so be it.

The unsorted stuff....
it's up for discussion right here anytime!
Not sure exactly what that might be,
but the coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

Getting a late start on getting the fog cleared this morning myself.
Another cup or two and I might get firing on all cylinders.
